After a tough travel schedule costing $30,000 this season, Miramar Rangers fell one game short losing their Chatham Cup semi-final 1-3 against Birkenhead United on Sunday.

Coach Wiremu Patrick says Miramar did not play as well as they can and a number of chances to score went astray against first-time finalists Birkenhead United.

Miramar was the only team outside of Auckland in the semi-finals.

Travel has been the theme for the Rangers this year with 15 out of their 24 matches away games adding a big price tag to the season.

“We are an amateur club so we have to stretch the budget and be as cost effective as possible without compromising the players,” Patrick says.

The 2000km of travel included flights for 20 at a time to Auckland and Christchurch, buses and minivans for travel to Napier and the Wairarapa.

For amateur sports clubs, funding is always an issue so sponsorship wherever possible is great and the Rangers have been fortunate to get some community funding this year, says Patrick.

Members pay subs to play, the club runs a football academy and holds an annual quiz night to raise funds for the club.

The outstanding cost is not just to players, however with their loyal supporters making as many of the trips as possible to support the team.

“We have a really good core group of supporters who have travelled to support us in Napier, the Wairarapa and down to Christchurch” says Patrick.

Despite Sunday’s result Patrick is proud of his team’s effort this season with some big results in the Chatham Cup against Napier City Rovers, Wellington Olympic, Wairarapa United and Cashmere Tech.

The players and coaching staff will take a break before gathering again in January for pre-season work.
